Just because you have a conservative church wedding and an elegant dinner and reception at the most exclusive social club in town doesn’t mean your fancy guests won’t jump in the pool. In their formalwear.
One might think: But what did the bride’s parents say?! Well, they said, “Been there, done that.”
Katy and Jesse were married at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, with a reception at a private social club – the exact same wedding locations of Katy’s parents’ wedding 32 years ago. And just like Katy’s dad and his groomsmen did back then, Jesse and his groomsmen led the charge by jumping in the club’s pool out back toward the end of the reception.
But let’s back up to the beginning of the weekend, which started with a rehearsal dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the country – Hugo’s. Based on all the speeches about Katy, she is a strong, intelligent woman who works for political campaigns and women’s rights. And also has amazing hair. Like, always. According to all the speeches about Jesse, he is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, is super hot, and is super lucky to have a girl like Katy.
Together eight years, they make out every chance they get and stare holes into each other’s faces as if newly infatuated with one another. On the wedding day it started with their first look and continued into the night. In that next-to-last photo, that’s how I found them, making out on the stairs just before they were supposed to exit to their getaway car.
Katy and Jesse are also very sentimental, and have a strong sense of loyalty and family. After all the tearful, hilarious and heartfelt speeches at the rehearsal dinner, Katy and Jesse got up to speak.
“We’re looking around at all of you, and we see… our lives,”Jesse said. I thought about what he said for a long time. Yes, weddings are amazing because they gather all your favorite people from all aspects of your life into one place. It is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. But to see their wedding trace the same steps of Katy’s parents’ wedding, all the way to the reckless finale in the pool, brought even more depth to his words.
A new marriage is the continuation of a history begun by those who came first. Each marriage extends the story into a new chapter. But sometimes, the new authors circle back to revisit and repeat some of the best parts, adding their own modern flourishes. And that’s when you know the original writers did something right.
