Summerville, just 25 miles from downtown Charleston, has become a hotspot for people relocating to the Charleston area. We extend a warm, Southern welcome to all the new Summerville residents! We’re happy to have you here. And to those who have made Summerville home for much longer, we’re excited to hear about your favorite locations to take photos in Summerville.
Family Photos at The Ponds in Summerville
We loved getting to do family photos in Summerville in The Ponds neighborhood. We found The Ponds to be a heavenly place of ancient oaks and cascading Spanish moss, beautiful evening light, and lots of space to explore and maybe find a little mischief (when a family has three boys, it’s inevitable!).
Photos at Colonial Dorchester Historic Site
However, there are so many beautiful places to take photos in Summerville! The Colonial Dorchester Historic Site, on the Ashley River, is also a great backdrop for family photos, engagement photos, or wedding photos. Specifically, we love the ruins of the bell tower of St. George’s Anglican Church, which dates back to 1720 and was built by Puritan settlers from England. The bell tower itself was added in 1751. After the Revolutionary War, British troops set the church on fire in 1781 before they left the area, Soon after, the town of Dorchester was abandoned.
You’ll also find the remains of the Fort Dorchester powder magazine, built in 1757, at the historic site. It’s considered the country’s best-preserved tabby fortification. Tabby is a concrete mixture made from burned oyster shells, water, sand, and ash.
If you’re looking for ideas of what to do after your photo session, you can stop by Swig and Swine (less than a mile away) for good BBQ or visit Azalea Square (8.4 miles away) for shopping and dining.
Photos at Azalea Park in Summerville
Azalea Park is another Summerville photo location that is absolutely gorgeous. We would LOVE to do someone’s Summerville family photos or engagement photos here, especially during the azalea blooms in late March or early April. However, the park is so beautiful even without the azaleas. There are picturesque vintage bridges, and also a sculpture garden, and walking trails.
