We are destination wedding photographers based in Charleston, SC. This was our first time photographing an engagement session on top of a glacier.
Photographing this Alaska engagement session was an adventurer’s dream come true!
When Sarah and Angelique picked us up from the Anchorage airport, we headed straight to their place to meet their dogs and have a beer. They also showed us the video of Angelique’s proposal to Sarah, surreptitiously caught on video by Angelique’s friend Marcus, a helicopter pilot who flew them to a glacier that day. It was Sarah’s birthday, and she thought they were just going out on a fun Alaska adventure. But then Angelique, fumbling and nervous, asked the big question. They were crying in the video, and they were crying there with us, watching it again.
We spent the next two days exploring the rugged, natural, jaw-dropping beauty of Alaska with the goal of taking engagement photos and just having a good time, getting to know one another. In addition to being a pilot, Sarah is also a photographer, so there was a lot to talk about! On Day 1 their dogs joined us, and it was so much fun watching them run around through the woods, and having them hike alongside us on Matanuska Glacier. On Day 2, sans dogs, Marcus took us by helicopter to a couple of far-out spots, including Lake George Glacier – a huge, gorgeous blue glacier that was just absolutely mesmerizing.
The trip ended with a cozy dinner in the quaint ski town of Girdwood, and the four of us driving back to Anchorage, taking turns DJ’ing on the iPod, belting out “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles as our grand finale. Photographer-Client bonding achieved.
Edit: Check out Sarah and Angelique’s wedding at Cave B in Quincy, Washington, where we were treated to spectacular views (these girls sure do love a good backdrop!), an emotional ceremony and a party with more than a few spilled drinks on the dance floor.
