Charleston Headshots: What to Expect

Whether this is your first time getting headshots made or you do this every year, we are here for you to guide you through the entire experience.

Before Your Headshot Session

Your experience begins with a phone call where we get to hear all about you and your career, your passion, your goals, and what you want people to see in you through your photographs. And if you don’t even know what that is yet, don’t worry. We will help you figure that out.

After we choose a date, time and location for your headshots, we will connect you with hair and makeup artists if desired and are happy to help you choose what to wear. At the very least, we can recommend specific colors and types of clothing that will work best.

What to Wear Guidelines

Colors: Rich mid-tones, jewel tones (like sapphire blue, emerald green, or plum), and solid neutrals work best. Avoid super bright neon colors or completely solid skin-tone shades.

For guys, you can never go wrong with a light blue dress shirt and a suit jacket. For the ladies, wearing shirts and dresses that are over-the -shoulders is usually the most flattering.

And we often incorporate different poses that include your pants, so dressing head to toe is really helpful. So you can leave the Crocs and shorts for the beach.

Patterns: Keep patterns subtle or stick to solid colors. Bold, busy prints can distract from your face and cause distortion (“moiré”) on digital screens.

Layers & Texture: Layers like blazers, jackets, or structured cardigans add dimension and let you easily switch between a corporate look and a casual vibe.

What Happens During Your Headshot Session

Your photographer will be either Ben, Erin or Matt. Ben loves working with small business owners looking to expand their brand identity with in-studio and on-location sessions. Erin loves photographing female-owned businesses, real-estate agents, and entrepreneurs either in the studio or on location, in the context of their professions. Matt brings his extensive knowledge of the Charleston area to give people a look and feel that is reflective of the Holy City. All three of us have 10+ years under our belts as headshot and portrait photographers, and we can’t wait to give you an amazing experience based on exactly what you need.

During your session, we will guide you through the most effective poses, and give you details on how to bring out your best expressions based on the feeling and message you want to convey. Our spacious 1,300-sq-foot Charleston photography studio is equipped with multiple backdrops, and we can create a specific look that perfectly matches your brand.

We’ll photograph you both standing and seated to give you a lot of variety. Alternatively, if your company has given you guidelines on exactly what they need (specific backdrop and pose), we can follow those specifications. That way, your photos are consistent with the other headshots on your company’s website.

Want hair and make-up? Just let us know. We have three amazing hair and make-up artists we work with that come to the studio and make sure you look perfect without you lifting a finger.

And most importantly, we’ll make your time at our studio happy, fun, and comfortable. Our studio has a wardrobe rack, restrooms, a place to change clothes, as well as a fridge filled with water and sodas. And we’d love the opportunity to make you a cup of coffee or tea.

After Your Session

Your portraits will be ready to review in our beautiful theater room either that day or just a couple of days after your session. We’ll help you choose the photos that look and feel the best and that get you closer to your goals. This is a fun, relaxed experience. Moreover, you will walk away feeling excited and confident in your decisions. Your selections are then fully retouched and delivered to you via a personalized online gallery, usually the next day, as high-resolution jpegs.

Can you match my company’s existing headshot style?
Yes. If your company has specific brand guidelines regarding backdrop color, lighting setup, or framing (e.g., a specific gray background or a tight crop), just send them over before your session. We will precisely replicate the style so your new portrait fits seamlessly on the team directory page.

How long does it take to get my edited files back?
We know you often need your professional headshot quickly for a press release, launch, or job application. Your proofs are typically delivered within 24-48 hours after your session, and the fully-edited retouched digital files are finished 1-2 days after that. We’re fast.

Do you offer background retouching or skin editing?
Every final image you purchase goes through our signature retouching process. We take care of temporary blemishes, stray hairs, and subtle skin smoothing while ensuring you still look entirely like yourself—just polished, confident, and well-rested.

Headshot Pricing

Headshot sessions start at $298. If you just need one picture, $298 will be your total, which includes the session in our studio and a fully retouched, high-resolution digital file. We offer discounts when you select multiple pictures, and offer packages for more detailed business branding.

The session includes an hour of photography, as many clothing changes as you’d like, and multiple background options to fit the look and feel you want. After the session, during your design consultation in our studio, we’ll help you select the photo(s) you’d like to purchase.
