We are Charleston-based wedding photographers who often travel for weddings outside of our city. This one took us to Miami Beach.
OF COURSE disco music accidentally played in the middle of Alex and Tony’s black-tie ceremony. And of course, rather than look horrified, Alex smiled and did a little Saturday Night Fever move while Tony circled her seven times, in an ancient Jewish wedding tradition.
The blending of the serious and silly seems to be a theme in the lives of these two brilliant people. Both Ivy League-educated doctors – Alex as a gynecologic oncologist and Tony as an orthopedic surgeon – they are also two of the funniest, quirkiest, weirdest-in-the-best-way people we’ve ever photographed. It’s a marvel to watch two people who have such intense, important jobs make ridiculous faces at each other, do a disco dance in the middle of their wedding ceremony, and even crowd-surf at their reception. They know firsthand that way too many aspects of life are hard. So they elevate the good ones into the best, most hilarious, most entertaining, most loving ones they can. And they have a damn good time doing it. But it must be said – for every funny face they make at each other, there are just as many moments of looking at each other like they can’t believe their good luck in finding love like this.
Bride and Groom as Entertainment
Alex and Tony’s Miami Beach wedding, at The Miami Beach EDITION hotel, was formal, fancy, and at the same time full of goofy ridiculousness meant to delight everyone they loved. As their first dance, they blasted onto the floor with a high-energy, choreographed dance to “Kiss” by Prince. The father-daughter dance to “Walk the Dinosaur” was Alex and her dad Jeff each in their own space mimicking the odd dance moves from the 1988 funk song. Their guests savored every second.
Why a Miami wedding?
Miami is a great wedding location for winter weddings because of the warm weather, lively nightlife and of course the beach. However, this was no destination wedding for Alex. Alex grew up here. The beach, bay views and nightlife feel like home to her. The wedding weekend started with a Thursday family dinner at the legendary Joe’s Stone Crab.
The welcome party the next night was at Alex’s childhood home on Biscayne Bay. The wedding at the Miami Beach EDITION, with an indoor ceremony and reception that had a 1960s social club vibe, was perfectly executed by Teresa of Blumberg Events. Guests were treated to an elegant, entertaining and fun weekend by a family who values relationships and takes care of those they love.
We left Miami feeling exhilarated, and so grateful to have met this crew. We’re just bummed we can’t hang out with them all the time. Life is definitely way more fun when they’re around. But how awesome to know they’re out there doing such good work and, in their spare time, constantly one-upping each other in the comedy game. Life certainly brought these two together for a reason. And we can’t wait to watch their lives get even better as a family.
