The Charleston area offers many gorgeous options for an authentic Southern wedding. Old Wide Awake Plantation is one of those. The old home, which incidentally was never used as a working plantation, is the kind of property you imagine when you think of quintessential historic Southern homes - the white wood exterior, the long tree-lined driveway, the wrap-around porch. Couples who marry here have an outdoor ceremony on the lawn, with a reception under a grand tent beside the house.
Old Wide Awake Park is separate from the plantation house but adjacent. We love the feel of Old Wide Awake Park because you can have your ceremony right by the water, with the ancient oaks and Spanish moss providing the perfect Southern backdrop. Guests will have a serene view of the Stono River as you say your vows.
Receptions take place on an open-air patio, where you can dance under the stars, and kids have room to run around and play.
The best times to get married at Old Wide Awake are early spring (April) and autumn (October or November). The plantation home and park are located about 30 minutes outside of downtown Charleston in the town of Hollywood, S.C.
