This Charleston wedding at Poogan’s Courtyard was eight years in the making. It started with a one-sided crush, which blossomed into friendship, which exploded into an epiphany.
“I might end up dating a girl,” Chauna told her sister one day, at the end of a 7-hour road trip during which she and Ayana had texted nonstop, with Chauna constantly checking her phone, excited to get each new text. She realized she really liked this girl, after dating men for years and no one ever feeling special.
Their relationship just flowed from the very start. Their first kiss, on Christmas Eve, solidified it. And they’ve been laughing, adventuring, loving, and supporting each other ever since.
Gay Wedding in Charleston
Their wedding at Poogan’s Courtyard in downtown Charleston was intimate – 30 people – and one of the most fun days we’ve ever photographed. The wedding ceremony was emotional and full of joy. For the reception, Chauna and Ayana surprised their guests by having two drag queens dressed as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga (from HunksDivasBabes) “crash” their reception. The expressions on the faces of the brides’ relatives were priceless. Guests were given rainbow fans and colorful sunglasses to add to the LGBTQ wedding celebration. Guests danced until the very end of the evening, then headed back to their Isle of Palms rental houses to continue the party.
All About Poogan’s Courtyard
Poogan’s Courtyard is the perfect Charleston wedding venue for a small wedding. Chauna and Ayana chose to have a long banquet table for their wedding dinner. After dinner, the dance party took place right there in the room in an open space by the banquet table. Though the room is small, there is plenty of room for a DJ, lighting, and space for 30 people to have a very energetic dance party.
Where to Take Your Wedding Portraits
If you’re getting married at Poogan’s Courtyard and want your couple’s portraits to be in a walkable location, you’re in luck. Waterfront Park is just a short walk from Poogan’s Courtyard. We took photos by the water, along the scenic walkways, and in some little alleys we found on the way back to Poogan’s. The street scene is vibrant in this area of town, with lots of people walking around. This only adds to the fun energy of the day, and allows your photographer to capture the vibe of downtown Charleston.
